What actually sets the price

Five inputs explain almost all of the variation between two wardrobe quotes.

Length

Cost is quoted per square foot of shutter face, so length multiplied by height is the largest lever in any quote.

Opening type

Hinged doors are the cheapest on hardware. Sliding systems need tracks and rollers; walk-in layouts need more carcass per unit of storage.

Door count

More, narrower doors mean more hinges or track hardware and more edge-banding — a real, separate cost from shutter area.

Material & accessories

Finish tier sets the base rate; drawers, racks, lighting and mirrors are flat add-ons that don't scale with length.

How many doors should my wardrobe actually have?+

A comfortable hinged door is roughly 1.5–2 ft wide, so a 7 ft wardrobe typically works well as 3–4 doors. Sliding wardrobes are usually built with 2–3 wider panels since each panel has to clear the full height on a track.

Why does a sliding wardrobe cost more than a hinged one of the same size?+

Sliding systems need aluminium tracks, rollers, and soft-stop mechanisms that hinged doors simply don't require, which is why the rate per square foot runs higher — even with fewer, wider panels.

Is a loft always worth adding?+

If your ceiling height allows it, a loft is usually the cheapest storage you'll ever buy — it's priced at a lighter rate than the main carcass since it needs less finishing.

Will a carpenter's quote match this number exactly?+

Treat it as a planning range, not a final invoice. Site access, transport, brand of hardware, and regional labour rates can move the real quote within roughly the range shown.
